I LOVE Split Pea Soup, before I stopped eating meat, Split Pea Soup with Ham, was one of my favorite soups to make after a ham dinner.

Well guys you will love this vegan version and you will not miss the ham, trust me! - and it's one of the easiest soups to make!

This is such a straight forward recipe, just a little prep time and the stove ( or slow cooker) does the rest.

HOW TO MAKE VEGAN SPLIT PEA SOUP ( STOVE TOP VERSION) :

To get started rinse your split peas well, then add to your favourite soup pot, ( at least 5 qt or bigger) with the salt, bay leaves and water. Bring to a boil, cover and reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes.

While the peas are simmering add your onions, tablespoon oil, ( or broth/water) pinch of salt & pepper to a med/lg skillet. Saute on med heat for 5-7 minutes or so till soft and slightly caramely, stirring occasionally, then add the rest of veggies and cook for 5 minutes till softened.

After 15 minutes add the veggies to the pot and simmer, covered for an additional 45 to 50 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Remove from heat, season with salt and pepper if desired. If the soup seems to thick add more water and additional bouillon paste if you like, or broth. Frying your veggies first is optional, but adds extra flavour.

HOW TO MAKE VEGAN SPLIT PEA SOUP ( SLOW COOKER VERSION) :

Rinse your peas well and add them to your slow cooker along with the rest of ingredients. Cover and cook on low for 8-9 hours or on high for 5-6 hours.

When done add more salt and pepper if necessary and more water/bouillon or broth if soup seems to thick. As I stated in the stove top version you can fry veggies first before adding to slow cooker, for added flavour?

That's the recipe folks, easy right?! Ok go check your cupboards for split peas. It's soup time.

You will love this Vegan split Pea Soup, it's:

    Rich

    Hearty

    Cheap to make

    Easy

    Addicting

    Healthy

    Protein rich

    Comfort in a bowl

    Enjoy you guys! Happy Day?

    Description

This is the Easiest and Best Vegan Split Pea Soup Recipe, it's rich, hearty and delicious! made with everyday ingredients. The flavour is outstanding! and it can easily be made in a slow cooker. Gluten free and easily oil free!

    Ingredients

    Scale
    • 3 cups  green split peas
    • 9.5 cups water
    • 1 tbsp oil, or so (opt), see instructions*
    • 1 large yellow onion, diced (2 cups or so)
    • 3 large  carrots, diced ( 2 cups or so)
    • 4 large celery stalks, diced (2 cups or so)
    • 4 garlic cloves, chopped
    • 2 bay leaves
    • 2 and ½ tablespoon "Better than Bouillon Seasoned Vegetable Base"
    • 1 and ½ teaspoon salt
    • ½ tsp ground black pepper
    • 1 tsp ground cumin
    • 1 tsp ground coriander
    • ½ tsp dried thyme
    • ½ tsp paprika
    • ¼ tsp cayenne pepper
    • 1 and ½ teaspoon granulated garlic
    • 1 tsp liquid smoke

    Instructions

    STOVE TOP VERSION:

    1. Rinse the green split peas well and add them to your favorite soup pot (5 qt or bigger) with salt, bay leaves and water. Bring to a boil, cover and reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes.
    2. While peas are simmering add onions, oil ( or broth/water), pinch of salt & pepper to a med/lg skillet . Saute on medium heat for 5-7 minutes or so till onions are soft and slightly  caramely, then add rest of veggies and cook for 5 minutes or so till slightly softened.
    3. After 15 minutes add rest of ingredients to the pot, cover and continue to simmer for an additional 45 to 50 minutes, stirring occasionally , until peas are (fall apart) soft.
    4. Remove from heat season with more salt and pepper if desired. If the soup seems to thick add more water/bouillon if you like, or broth.
    5. Frying your veggies first is optional but adds extra flavour
    6. Enjoy!

    SLOW COOKER VERSION:

    1. Rinse the green split peas well and add them to your Slow Cooker along with the rest of the ingredients.
    2. Cover and cook on low for 8-9 hrs or on high for 5-6 hrs, until peas are (fall apart) tender.
    3. Add additional salt and pepper if you like and more water/bouillon or broth if the soup seems to thick.
    4. As I stated in the "Stove Top" version, frying your veggies first is optional but adds extra flavour.
    5. Enjoy!

    Notes

    • The soup will thicken considerably when cooled. When reheating don't add water until it is heated through, because it might not be necessary.

Loved your vegan pea soup recipe. It has lots of flavor, because of the extra spices. The extra spices is what drew me to it. Thanks.

Can I substitute dried split chick peas (chana dal) for the green split peas?

I have not tried this my recipe using dried chick peas so I cannot say. Let me know if you do and how it turns out. Soaking the chick peas over night will greatly reduce the cooking time. Have a great day
