vegetarian split pea soup in a pot
I LOVE Split Pea Soup, before I stopped eating meat, Split Pea Soup with Ham, was one of my favorite soups to make after a ham dinner.

Well guys you will love this vegan version and you will not miss the ham, trust me! - and it's one of the easiest soups to make!

This is such a straight forward recipe, just a little prep time and the stove ( or slow cooker) does the rest.

HOW TO MAKE VEGAN SPLIT PEA SOUP ( STOVE TOP VERSION) :

To get started rinse your split peas well, then add to your favourite soup pot, ( at least 5 qt or bigger) with the salt, bay leaves and water. Bring to a boil, cover and reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes.

While the peas are simmering add your onions, tbsp oil, ( or broth/water) pinch of salt & pepper to a med/lg skillet. Saute on med heat for 5-7 minutes or so till soft and slightly caramely, stirring occasionally, then add the rest of veggies and cook for 5 minutes till softened.

After 15 minutes add the veggies to the pot and simmer, covered for an additional 45 to 50 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Remove from heat, season with salt and pepper if desired. If the soup seems to thick add more water and additional bouillon paste if you like, or broth. Frying your veggies first is optional, but adds extra flavour.

HOW TO MAKE VEGAN SPLIT PEA SOUP ( SLOW COOKER VERSION) :

Rinse your peas well and add them to your slow cooker along with the rest of ingredients. Cover and cook on low for 8-9 hours or on high for 5-6 hours.

When done add more salt and pepper if necessary and more water/bouillon or broth if soup seems to thick. As I stated in the stove top version you can fry veggies first before adding to slow cooker, for added flavour?

The best split pea soup recipe! I loved the spices and slight kick of the cayenne pepper.
I made it in the slow cooker and added crumbled smoky tempeh bacon for the last hour and it was amazing.
    Thank you!

I made this in the crockpot yesterday and it was FANTASTIC! I've been looking for low-fat vegetarian soup recipes that I can make in the crockpot and this HIT THE SPOT. The liquid smoke and cayenne pepper gives it that tiny dose of spice and familiar smokey-meat like flavor. You do not need the ham or bacon AT ALL. Thank you so much!! This is definitely a keeper!!!
