I LOVE Split Pea Soup, before I stopped eating meat, Split Pea Soup with Ham, was one of my favorite soups to make after a ham dinner.

Well guys you will love this vegan version and you will not miss the ham, trust me! - and it's one of the easiest soups to make!

This is such a straight forward recipe, just a little prep time and the stove ( or slow cooker) does the rest.

HOW TO MAKE VEGAN SPLIT PEA SOUP ( STOVE TOP VERSION) :

To get started rinse your split peas well, then add to your favourite soup pot, ( at least 5 qt or bigger) with the salt, bay leaves and water. Bring to a boil, cover and reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes.

While the peas are simmering add your onions, tablespoon oil, ( or broth/water) pinch of salt & pepper to a med/lg skillet. Saute on med heat for 5-7 minutes or so till soft and slightly caramely, stirring occasionally, then add the rest of veggies and cook for 5 minutes till softened.

After 15 minutes add the veggies to the pot and simmer, covered for an additional 45 to 50 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Remove from heat, season with salt and pepper if desired. If the soup seems to thick add more water and additional bouillon paste if you like, or broth. Frying your veggies first is optional, but adds extra flavour.

HOW TO MAKE VEGAN SPLIT PEA SOUP ( SLOW COOKER VERSION) :

Rinse your peas well and add them to your slow cooker along with the rest of ingredients. Cover and cook on low for 8-9 hours or on high for 5-6 hours.

When done add more salt and pepper if necessary and more water/bouillon or broth if soup seems to thick. As I stated in the stove top version you can fry veggies first before adding to slow cooker, for added flavour?

This soup is delicious. Spices are just right. The only change I would make is to omit the salt and add potatoes. Great with a crusty loaf of bread. I will be making it again soon. Thank you.

I love this recipe. I have made it countless times in the slow cooker. It's still flavorful without sauteing the vegetables first. Key to this, I think, are the cumin, cayenne, paprika, and liquid smoke! I reduce the Better than Bullion by quite a bit (I use maybe 2 tsp), as I've always found said bullion very salty, and I'm also adding the listed 1.5 tsp of salt to this recipe. So, I suggest using less the first time you make it, then see if you think it needs more salt. I find it's incredibly flavorful and lacking nothing this way!

Delicious recipe! Did not change a thing aside from using an immersion blender at the end. Super flavourful, will definitely make again.

This soup is delicious! I used the slow cooker version directions. I did not add paprika, cayenne pepper or oil and I used 2/3 vegan better than bouillon broth and 1/3 water.
