This is the Easiest and Best Vegan Split Pea Soup Recipe, it's rich, hearty and delicious! made with everyday ingredients. The flavour is outstanding! and it can easily be made in a slow cooker. Gluten free and easily oil free!
I LOVE Split Pea Soup, before I stopped eating meat, Split Pea Soup with Ham, was one of my favorite soups to make after a ham dinner.
Well guys you will love this vegan version and you will not miss the ham, trust me! - and it's one of the easiest soups to make!
This is such a straight forward recipe, just a little prep time and the stove ( or slow cooker) does the rest.
HOW TO MAKE VEGAN SPLIT PEA SOUP ( STOVE TOP VERSION) :
To get started rinse your split peas well, then add to your favourite soup pot, ( at least 5 qt or bigger) with the salt, bay leaves and water. Bring to a boil, cover and reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes.
While the peas are simmering add your onions, tablespoon oil, ( or broth/water) pinch of salt & pepper to a med/lg skillet. Saute on med heat for 5-7 minutes or so till soft and slightly caramely, stirring occasionally, then add the rest of veggies and cook for 5 minutes till softened.
After 15 minutes add the veggies to the pot and simmer, covered for an additional 45 to 50 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Remove from heat, season with salt and pepper if desired. If the soup seems to thick add more water and additional bouillon paste if you like, or broth. Frying your veggies first is optional, but adds extra flavour.
HOW TO MAKE VEGAN SPLIT PEA SOUP ( SLOW COOKER VERSION) :
Rinse your peas well and add them to your slow cooker along with the rest of ingredients. Cover and cook on low for 8-9 hours or on high for 5-6 hours.
When done add more salt and pepper if necessary and more water/bouillon or broth if soup seems to thick. As I stated in the stove top version you can fry veggies first before adding to slow cooker, for added flavour?
That's the recipe folks, easy right?! Ok go check your cupboards for split peas. It's soup time.

I've not eaten many split pea soups to compare, but this was very good. It took over an hour to get the peas done so next time I will remember that. The seasoning is very good. I did add some soy milk towards the end to give it that creamy consistency. My non-vegan housemate said it's a keeper. Thanks for the recipe!
Lea
This is one of our favorite soups and I make it often. I make it on the stovetop. I add a 1-2 lbs of cubed potatoes and we use an immersion blender at the end to blend it. Delicious!
Verna Rindler
Thanks for the wonderful review Lea, so happy you're enjoying the soup. Love the addition of potatoes 🙂
Rita

Amy
I’m excited to make this. When you say split peas do you mean dry or cooked? Thanks!
Verna
Hi Amy you need dry uncooked green split peas for the soup. Enjoy 🙂
Lee
I have made this Vegan Pea Soup twice as instructed (except I used my Instant Pot on High Pressure for 20 minutes) and it is delicious and freezes great! I do enjoy stopping by your website except the constant pop-up advertisements are very distracting.
Verna
Thanks so much Lee! I appreciate the wonderful feedback with instant pot suggestions. The pop ups I am working on 🙂 they keep my site running so it's tricky.
debbie
Hi The soup sounds delicious. Is there a replacement for better than bouillion and liquid smoke. thanks so much
Verna
Hi Debbie, this is how I make it but you could omit bouillon and use veggie broth instead of water (or use different type of bouillon- cubes etc,..) and maybe add some smoked paprika instead of liquid smoke. It might not be quite as flavourful. Hope that helps.
Donna Wood
BEST soup ever! So hearty. Serve with crusty bread and you have a delicious meal.
Verna
Thank you so much Donna for the wonderful feedback I am so happy you enjoyed it, feel free to leave a star rating too- really helpful 🙂
LC
Made this yet again tonight and just very lightly sprayed the pan with olive oil to saute the veggies. I bet you could even omit that small amount of oil and still have an outrageously flavorful, delicious and filling soup while being very healthy!!!!! I'm trying to eat healthier and I'm more thankful than ever for this recipe.
Verna
Yes you could easily omit the oil! Happy healthy eating 🙂 xo
Sherrill
This is the second time I've made this soup in a week. It's fantastic and perfect for sharing with others:)
Thanks for all the great recipes. I haven't tried one that I haven't loved!!
Verna
Thank you so much Sherrill you made my day, what a nice compliment. Feel free to leave a star rating as well -always helpful 🙂
cristina tomas
This soup is perfect, easy to make and so delicious!
Question, can I freeze it? Thank you
Cristina
Verna
Yes you can! Freeze the pea soup for up to 3 months.
Vickie
Good morning! I love this soup. I have been making it for years with just about the same exact ingredients. The flavor is wonderful. A friend of mine adds about 1/2 of a diced (orange) sweet potato and the added little bits of sweetness is just lovely. Thanks for all your great recipes!!
Verna
Thanks for the great feedback Vickie! Love the add ins and I am so happy you enjoyed the soup -great minds think alike 🙂
Mel
This recipe is incredible! The flavor is perfect to me. Thank you for sharing! 💛
Verna
Thank you so much Mel! Thrilled you enjoyed the soup. Really appreciate your feedback!
Chris
I made this today and it’s very very tasty but it took forever.. I did it in my Slow Oven and it was in there for 12hours and the split peas were still like split peas not mushy at all. I moved everything into a saucepan and simmered it for 1 hour 30 minutes when it finally started to resemble pea soup.
Verna
Glad you enjoyed it. sounds like you might need a new slow cooker!
Chris
It’s a slow oven not a slow cooker 😉 it’s part of my Range 🙂
LC
Your split peas possibly be old/expired..
Christine
Yes I experienced the same thing and old split peas take far longer to cook.
Chris
I bought the split peas the day before I made the soup. I guess they can still be old when you buy them. I’ll try a different brand next time as I really like the soup and want to make it again soon 🙂
LC
I'm glad you're willing to try it again. I hope it works out for you!
Tammy
This soup is good…really good. The spice combo really knocks the flavor out of the park. I love a meal that will satisfy the vegans and non-vegans in my house. This fit the bill perfectly. Only thing I did different is reduce the carrots and celery by 1/2 c each and added 1c diced potatoes. It was perfect. Thank you for a great recipe.
Verna
Thanks for the wonderful feedback Tammy -really helpful! So happy you all enjoyed it.
Mel
I made this yesterday for the first time. My daughter suggested the same to me. To add potatoes. I will definitely try this next time!
Krisha
Hi I want to make this and have a question. To keep it one pot on the stove can I reverse the order and sauté/fry the veggies first in Dutch oven snd then add broth, water, and split peas adjusting the cook time w peas to same cook time? Excited to try this, thank you!
Verna
Oh for sure Krisha! enjoy 🙂
