I LOVE Split Pea Soup, before I stopped eating meat, Split Pea Soup with Ham, was one of my favorite soups to make after a ham dinner.

Well guys you will love this vegan version and you will not miss the ham, trust me! - and it's one of the easiest soups to make!

This is such a straight forward recipe, just a little prep time and the stove ( or slow cooker) does the rest.

HOW TO MAKE VEGAN SPLIT PEA SOUP ( STOVE TOP VERSION) :

To get started rinse your split peas well, then add to your favourite soup pot, ( at least 5 qt or bigger) with the salt, bay leaves and water. Bring to a boil, cover and reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes.

While the peas are simmering add your onions, tablespoon oil, ( or broth/water) pinch of salt & pepper to a med/lg skillet. Saute on med heat for 5-7 minutes or so till soft and slightly caramely, stirring occasionally, then add the rest of veggies and cook for 5 minutes till softened.

After 15 minutes add the veggies to the pot and simmer, covered for an additional 45 to 50 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Remove from heat, season with salt and pepper if desired. If the soup seems to thick add more water and additional bouillon paste if you like, or broth. Frying your veggies first is optional, but adds extra flavour.

HOW TO MAKE VEGAN SPLIT PEA SOUP ( SLOW COOKER VERSION) :

Rinse your peas well and add them to your slow cooker along with the rest of ingredients. Cover and cook on low for 8-9 hours or on high for 5-6 hours.

When done add more salt and pepper if necessary and more water/bouillon or broth if soup seems to thick. As I stated in the stove top version you can fry veggies first before adding to slow cooker, for added flavour?

That's the recipe folks, easy right?! Ok go check your cupboards for split peas. It's soup time.

You will love this Vegan split Pea Soup, it's:

    Rich

    Hearty

    Cheap to make

    Easy

    Addicting

    Healthy

    Protein rich

    Comfort in a bowl

    Enjoy you guys! Happy Day?

    Scale
    • 3 cups  green split peas
    • 9.5 cups water

    Instructions

    STOVE TOP VERSION:

    1. Rinse the green split peas well and add them to your favorite soup pot (5 qt or bigger) with salt, bay leaves and water. Bring to a boil, cover and reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes.
    2. While peas are simmering add onions, oil ( or broth/water), pinch of salt & pepper to a med/lg skillet . Saute on medium heat for 5-7 minutes or so till onions are soft and slightly  caramely, then add rest of veggies and cook for 5 minutes or so till slightly softened.

    6. Enjoy!

    SLOW COOKER VERSION:

    1. Rinse the green split peas well and add them to your Slow Cooker along with the rest of the ingredients.
    2. Cover and cook on low for 8-9 hrs or on high for 5-6 hrs, until peas are (fall apart) tender.
    3. Add additional salt and pepper if you like and more water/bouillon or broth if the soup seems to thick.
    4. As I stated in the "Stove Top" version, frying your veggies first is optional but adds extra flavour.
    5. Enjoy!

    Notes

    • The soup will thicken considerably when cooled. When reheating don't add water until it is heated through, because it might not be necessary.

I've not eaten many split pea soups to compare, but this was very good. It took over an hour to get the peas done so next time I will remember that. The seasoning is very good. I did add some soy milk towards the end to give it that creamy consistency. My non-vegan housemate said it's a keeper. Thanks for the recipe!

This is one of our favorite soups and I make it often. I make it on the stovetop. I add a 1-2 lbs of cubed potatoes and we use an immersion blender at the end to blend it. Delicious!

Hi Amy you need dry uncooked green split peas for the soup. Enjoy 🙂

I have made this Vegan Pea Soup twice as instructed (except I used my Instant Pot on High Pressure for 20 minutes) and it is delicious and freezes great! I do enjoy stopping by your website except the constant pop-up advertisements are very distracting.

Hi Debbie, this is how I make it but you could omit bouillon and use veggie broth instead of water (or use different type of bouillon- cubes etc,..) and maybe add some smoked paprika instead of liquid smoke. It might not be quite as flavourful. Hope that helps.

Made this yet again tonight and just very lightly sprayed the pan with olive oil to saute the veggies. I bet you could even omit that small amount of oil and still have an outrageously flavorful, delicious and filling soup while being very healthy!!!!! I'm trying to eat healthier and I'm more thankful than ever for this recipe.

Good morning! I love this soup. I have been making it for years with just about the same exact ingredients. The flavor is wonderful. A friend of mine adds about 1/2 of a diced (orange) sweet potato and the added little bits of sweetness is just lovely. Thanks for all your great recipes!!

I made this today and it’s very very tasty but it took forever.. I did it in my Slow Oven and it was in there for 12hours and the split peas were still like split peas not mushy at all. I moved everything into a saucepan and simmered it for 1 hour 30 minutes when it finally started to resemble pea soup.

I bought the split peas the day before I made the soup. I guess they can still be old when you buy them. I’ll try a different brand next time as I really like the soup and want to make it again soon 🙂

This soup is good…really good. The spice combo really knocks the flavor out of the park. I love a meal that will satisfy the vegans and non-vegans in my house. This fit the bill perfectly. Only thing I did different is reduce the carrots and celery by 1/2 c each and added 1c diced potatoes. It was perfect. Thank you for a great recipe.
