Is french toast vegan?
You can almost always find eggs in traditional french toast recipes, meaning it isn’t vegan-friendly. To make a vegan french toast recipe, all you have to do is swap the eggs for ingredients that help bind the batter together so it sticks and soaks into the bread as it fries. I used tofu, tapioca starch, and a few flavor enhancers to get the job done!
Easy vegan french toast ingredients:
- Extra firm tofu - Blending tofu in with the french toast batter will thicken it and ensures it sticks to the bread.
- Bread slices - The heartier, the better! The best vegan bread for french toast is one or two day old french bread, ciabatta, or grain bread.
- Dairy free milk - Any kind will work.
- Tapioca starch - To help the batter stick to the bread. Cornstarch is a great substitute.
- Nutritional yeast - This will add some savory flavors into the batter.
- Cinnamon - For a touch of warmth. Feel free to add more warm seasonings, like nutmeg or ginger.
- Maple syrup - A little goes into the batter for natural sweetness, plus more on top of the finished french toast!
How to make french toast without eggs:
Making an eggless french toast recipe is really easy! All you need is a blender, a non-stick pan, and a handful of ingredients. It all comes together in a few steps:
- Blend the tofu and the rest of the batter ingredients in a blender until it’s smooth. Pour it into a wide, shallow bowl.
- Melt some vegan butter or oil in a pan over medium high heat.
- Generously dip both sides of the sliced bread in the batter.
- Add 1 or 2 battered slices in the skillet to fry. Flip when golden brown, and fry the other side.
- Plate the finished french toast with as many toppings as you like and enjoy! For full ingredients and instructions see printable recipe card below
Of course! All you have to do is use your favorite gluten free bread. Try to use thick and hearty slices if you can.
Tips for success
- Stale bread is always the right choice because it soaks up the batter really well. Leave the bread slices out on the kitchen counter for 1 or 2 days if you don’t have state bread on hand.
- Try not to move the slices around in the skillet as they fry. This will help each side develop a nice crust.
- Craving vegan french toast sticks? Simply slice the finished french toast into sticks and dip in maple syrup or chocolate sauce!
- If you’re making a big batch, keep the finished french toast warm on a baking sheet in a 200ºF oven.
- Serve the slices immediately for the best results. They can become pretty soggy if stored for later.
Serving suggestions
Load the french toast with all kinds of sweet toppings, like:
- Maple syrup
- Powdered sugar
- Macerated strawberries
- Fresh fruit
- Vegan whipped cream
- Chocolate sauce
- Jam
Storing and reheating vegan french toast
While vegan french toast is best eaten fresh, you can store the leftovers in a sealed container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Just reheat them in a skillet over medium heat so they can get a bit crispy again.
To save time, you can make the batter 1 or 2 days ahead! Just keep it in a sealed container in the fridge until it’s time to eat.

Description
This is The Best and Easiest Vegan French Toast you’ll ever make! So fluffy, soft, and sweet, this vegan breakfast classic is made with tofu and ready in 20 minutes.
Ingredients
For french toast:
- ½ block tofu, extra firm (175 grams)
- ½ cup unsweetened vegan plant milk (oat milk, almond, etc..)
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black salt (for eggy flavour optional but recommended)
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon nutritional yeast
- ½ tablespoon tapioca starch (flour)
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- ½ tablespoon maple syrup
- 1 tablespoon vegan butter or oil, add more as needed
- 4-6 slices hearty bread of your choice, see notes*
Instructions
- Add the tofu and the rest of ingredients (except the bread and oil) to your blender or Nutra Bullet and process until smooth. Pour the batter into a wide shallow bowl ( I use a pie plate) and set aside
- Preheat non stick griddle or large non stick skillet to medium high heat. Add oil or vegan butter
- Dip both sides of bread generously in the batter, to get a really good coating.
- Add battered bread to the skillet and fry for 4-5 minutes per side. Try not to move it while cooking so it develops a nice crust. If pan gets to hot turn down it down to medium heat. Once golden remove from pan and serve immediately. Repeat with rest of bread, add more butter as needed for frying.
- Enjoy with maple syrup, sliced bananas, fresh fruit, or Macerated Strawberries or all four, lol! For step by step photos, FAQ, tips, and suggestions see above post
Notes
- To store and freeze: store the leftovers in a sealed container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Just reheat them in a skillet over medium heat so they can get a bit crispy again.
- I use 1 or two day old French bread (cut into 1 & ¼ inch or so slices) or hearty grain bread for this recipe. I do not recommend soft sandwich bread for this recipe, it isn't sturdy enough
- Make ahead: To save time, you can make the batter 1 or 2 days ahead! Just keep it in a sealed container in the fridge until it’s time to eat.
- This recipe can easily be doubled

And Can i use con meal instead of corn starch?
Verna
Hi Lilyan, no need to press tofu. The recipe calls for tapioca flour but I'm sure cornstarch would work. Corn meal will not work. Enjoy!
Bradley F
I have made French toast with just egg and I much prefer your recipe with tofu. It was very good thank you
Verna
thrilled you enjoyed it!
Hanna Long
could i just soaked the bread overnight and then bake it ?
Verna
Hi Hanna this isn't an overnight French toast recipe, it would need added ingredients for that. Have a great day!
Farrah
I would never have believed tofu and plant milk could replace the eggs for French toast but I am a total believer now. This recipe is amazing!!

Jolene
Best vegan french toast recipe I have tried! this is my go to for French toast now! just incredible! Thank you
Verna
Yay! thanks Jolene so happy you're enjoying it!
Alanna
Hi, could I use silken tofu instead of firm do you think?
Thanks.
Verna
Hi Alanna, I recommend using extra firm tofu. If you use silken tofu the batter won't be thick enough. Enjoy the French toast!
Heidi Boehringer
Can you freeze it?
Verna
Hi Heidi! I have not tried freezing it as we usually eat it all or reheat leftovers the next day. I bet it would freeze just fine after it has been cooked and cooled of course, and I wouldn't freeze longer than a month or two. Have a great day Heidi!
