Are vegan waffles healthy?
There’s no need for oil, eggs, dairy, or added sugar in this recipe! My banana waffles have some of the common ingredients you’ll find in most waffle recipes, like flour, baking powder, and salt. I did, however, swap the eggs and oil for more natural ingredients like applesauce, coconut milk, and bananas. These give the waffles plenty of moisture, a nice sweetness, and added nutrients!
Banana Waffle Ingredients:
- Flour - Use all purpose flour or gluten free flour (I like Robin Hood Brand or Bob's Red Mill) to make gluten free vegan waffles.
- Bananas - Just like vegan banana bread, a mashed spotty banana gives these waffles a nice banana flavour and a subtle sweetness.
- Oranges - You’ll need some fresh orange juice (or store bought in carton) and zest to give the waffles a bright and fresh flavor. If you don’t have oranges, you can use lemon instead.
- Applesauce - This is a great substitute for oil.
- Coconut Milk- To help the waffles taste super moist and creamy. They won’t taste like coconut, either!
- Cinnamon - For a touch of warmth and comfort.
How to make easy vegan banana waffles:
This recipe should leave you with about 6 waffles, but you can easily double or even triple the batch. So start pre-heating your waffle iron and get cooking!
- Mash the peeled ripe banana in a large mixing bowl.
- Add the rest of the wet ingredients to the bowl with the banana and mix everything together.
- Finish the vegan waffle mix by whisking the dry ingredients in with the wet ingredients
- Place a dollop of batter in the middle of your pre-heated waffle iron and cook until the waffles are crisp and golden brown. For full ingredients and instructions see printable recipe card below
Tips for success:
- To keep the cooked waffles warm, keep them on a baking sheet in a 200ºF oven.
- Add crushed walnuts or pecans in the batter to make banana nut waffles
- I have not tested this recipe with whole wheat flour but I think it would work just fine!
- If your waffle mix is too thick, stir in a little plant milk (I like oat or almond milk). If it’s too thin, feel free to add a little more flour.
- Craving chocolate banana waffles instead? Add a few tablespoons of cocoa powder to the batter.
Frequently asked questions:
Add chocolate chips, sliced bananas, blueberries, or crushed nuts to the waffle batter.
Vegan banana waffles are delicious with a drizzle of maple syrup but you can always take them up a notch with more toppings! A few of my favorites are macerated strawberries, walnuts, vegan whipped cream, fresh berries, shaved chocolate, caramel sauce, lemon curd, vegan yogurt, and nut butter.
You can store the leftover cooked waffles in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
Yes! They freeze beautifully, actually. Just wrap them up well in plastic or in a ziploc bag and freeze for up to 3 months. When it’s time to eat, just pop them in the toaster from frozen or reheat in the microwave.

I was looking for vegan and sugar free waffles for my son's breakfast box and came across your page 🙂 He is not a big fan of coconut. Do you think I could swap it with oat milk or a mix of oat milk/oat cream to make up for coconut milks thicker texture? Or would it mean too little fat in the recipe? Thank you!
Katie Hale
That should work fine in this instance.
